Oh, the excitement of that first day!
Well, we started a new school year on Monday at Wesson Attendance Center where our children attend. From what I could tell, few problems were experienced by staff members, teachers, admins, parents and children. Traffic on that first day was heavy–as expected–and handled very well by Mr. Brown, Coach Gunter and officers from Wesson Police Department. I expect much similar at the schools of Hazlehurst City School District and Crystal Springs.
Around our house, our school-agers could hardly contain their excitement over the past days leading up to the Big Day. Heck, 7-year-old Grayson was ready for it as soon as baseball season concluded on the first weekend in June! “I’m ready for school, now, Daddy,” he pointedly said on the ride back from the all-star weekend in Brandon, just a couple of weeks after finishing up first grade.
We adults can relate to that first day of school. I still have the picture that my Dad took of me stepping onto old Bus No. 25 at Frank Higdon’s Service Station waiting to deliver me to Mrs. Metts’ first grade class at Copiah Academy. The year . . .1976 (my how time flies). Most of us have such good memories of First Days of School. Thankfully, no one that I know has a tragic memory, and by the way things went Monday, this school year has begun with no accidents and no tragedies.
Nonetheless, whether your children are just beginning school, in middle school or seasoned veterans of high school, I’m sure the excitement of their First Day of School ‘12 brimmed over into your soul and brought back your good memories of your First Days, just as it did myself. We hope this school year is successful, safe and fun for you and your children.
